Cat Spraying: A Medical Or Behavioral Problem?
The cat spraying problems have become increasingly recognised in recent years. For some cats, spraying can indicate other medical problems and so you should always, if in any doubt get your cat examined at the vets before putting the spraying down to behavioural problems only. Cat spraying is a very simple behavior that the cat performs and it can cause major problems in many households.
The easiest and the most common way for a pet owner to stop a male cat spraying is to have them neutered. Neutering will lesson the chance that your male cat will continue to spray. There are some cat owners who for whatever reason are against the neutering of their male cats.
Some people believe that a medical procedure such as neutering a cat is inhumane. Some people feel their pets should not be forced to undergo to what they consider cruel treatment. For people that feel neutering would hurt their cat or keep them from breeding for income or to have more cuddly baby kittens there are options that may be better suited for them in lieu of having their kittens neutered.
In some instances, owners do not wish to neuter their male cats because of certain concerns or other issues. For example, some people may want to use their pets in a breeding program when the kittens reach reproductive maturity and therefore do not intend to neuter any of the kittens.
This is also true if you plan to breed your male cats with others' female cats to produce kittens, in which case other ways of changing your cat's behavior must be utilized.
Cats that are not neutered are more likely to spray in your house. Cat spray can be overwhelming and is sometimes is found on your furniture, bedding, carpets, clothing, flooring and the likes. Cat spray is extremely smelly and it does leave a nasty stain. If you are not able to neuter your cat you will need to use other techniques to stop the cat from spraying inside your house.
Cat spraying can be one of the biggest cat problems for pet owners. Because spraying can be linked to medical problems, always get your cats health checked before assuming that the spraying is just a behavioral problem. The most effective way to prevent a cat from spraying is to have it neutered. However, neutering is not always possible: for example, some owners feel they do not have the right to neuter their cats, and others plan to breed their cats. If neutering is not possible, you will need to find another way to prevent spraying.
